When Sam arrives in his Heaven, he’s surprised to find himself here. Halloween, 2005, he knows, the night seared into his brain for the rest of his life. He turns around and—
“Hey, stranger.”
She’s just as beautiful as he remembers. He can’t help the wide, goofy grin that he gets at the sight of her, and it plasters itself onto his face and won’t go away.
He opens his mouth to speak, but pauses, because what can he say at a moment like this? “You aren’t just a—”
“Figment of your Heavenly imagination?” At his dumbfounded look, she laughs, and god, he’s missed that sound. “Don’t look so surprised—I’ve been here a while, and I’ve learned a lot about how the place works. But no…it’s all me.”
Instead of responding, he kisses her, almost desperate to hold on and be sure that she won’t disappear. “I missed you so much, Jess.”
Jess smiles, and kisses him back softly. “I missed you, too, Sam.”
